Safety Trail is an optional TapOkie feature that lets you tap to log where you are when you're with someone. The trail is shared with your contacts only if you miss a check-in, via a private SMS link. It is never live-tracked, hides after three days, and is permanently deleted after 90 days.
There is a question that comes up often with safety apps: what happens in the gap between "I'm fine, I checked in" and "something went wrong"? For most days, a daily check-in answers that perfectly well. But sometimes — a first date, a visit to somewhere unfamiliar, a night out in a new city — you might want a little context logged quietly in the background, without broadcasting your location in real time to anyone who wants to look.
That is exactly what Safety Trail is for.
Safety Trail is not live tracking
Before anything else, it is worth saying clearly: Safety Trail does not track your location continuously. There is no live map that anyone can open at any moment to see where you are. TapOkie is built around the idea that your privacy matters even when you want to stay safe — and those two things do not have to conflict. Safety Trail is a manual, opt-in log. You tap to add a location. Nothing is recorded unless you choose to record it. The rest of your day — every street you walk down, every place you visit — stays entirely private.
How Safety Trail works
Safety Trail is an optional feature you switch on in Settings. Once enabled, you will see a button in the app labelled "I'm with someone." When you tap it, TapOkie quietly logs where you are at that moment. That is the extent of what happens. There is no background GPS running between taps, no movement tracking, no timeline being assembled without your knowledge.
If you have a Premium subscription, you can also attach a photo to each log entry — up to 20 per day. That might be a photo of the person you are meeting, the venue, or a nearby landmark. The idea is to give a clear picture of the context, should anyone ever need to look at it.
Each tap adds to a private record on your account. You can add as many or as few entries as feels right for the day.
Who sees the trail, and when
This is the part that matters most. Your Safety Trail is not visible to your trusted contacts during your day. There is no dashboard they can open to check on you. They cannot follow along. The trail sits privately on your account while you are out.
The only time the trail is shared is if you miss your check-in window.
If TapOkie sends a missed check-in alert — because you have not confirmed you are OK and your window has closed — that alert includes a private link to your Safety Trail. The link is sent via SMS, so your contacts do not need the TapOkie app installed. They open the link and see the places you logged, with any photos you added, in order of time.
This gives them relevant context at precisely the moment it might matter: when something appears to have gone wrong. Not before.

Privacy built in from the start
After a missed check-in alert is sent, the trail link remains active for three days. After three days, it is hidden automatically. All trail data is permanently deleted after 90 days. You can also delete any individual entry, or your entire trail, at any time from within the app.
This reflects TapOkie's broader approach to privacy-first safety. The goal is context on demand, not surveillance. Your movements are not stored indefinitely, not accessible to third parties, and not visible to anyone — including your contacts — except in the specific circumstances where they genuinely need it.
Free and Premium: what is included
Location logging in Safety Trail is available on the free tier. When you tap "I'm with someone," your location is recorded regardless of which plan you are on.
Photo attachments are a Premium feature. Premium also includes SOS alerts, contact lists of up to three people, and customisable check-in schedules. If you want the most complete version of Safety Trail — particularly the photo context that can make a trail genuinely useful — Premium gives you that.

When Safety Trail makes sense
Safety Trail will not be something everyone uses every day, and that is entirely fine. For most days, a daily check-in is exactly right: quick, low-friction, a single signal that you are OK.
Safety Trail is for the occasions where a little more context feels worthwhile. Meeting someone from a dating app for the first time. Collecting something sold online from a private address. Going somewhere new with people you do not know well. A late evening in an unfamiliar part of town. You do not have to use it — but it is there when you want it.
The way to think about it: your check-in tells your contacts you are OK. Your Safety Trail gives them the map if you are not.

Common questions
Does Safety Trail track my location all the time?
No. Safety Trail only logs a location when you manually tap "I'm with someone." There is no background GPS running between taps, and nothing is recorded automatically. You are always in control of what goes into your trail.
Can my contacts see my Safety Trail during the day?
No. Your trail is completely private while you are going about your day. Contacts can only access it if you miss a check-in and TapOkie sends them an alert with a private link. There is no way for them to view it otherwise.
