Emergency contacts get SMS alerts — no app download needed

Most safety apps force everyone to install something. TapOkie alerts your circle with a plain text message. Any mobile number works: smartphone or basic phone.

What this means in practice

If someone is your emergency contact on TapOkie, they do not need to install TapOkie, create an account, or leave a tracker running on their phone.

They receive ordinary SMS on the number they verified. That is how we keep setup friction on you — the person who wants the safety habit — not on parents, kids, neighbours, or colleagues who only need to know when something might be wrong.

How it works for your contacts

From their side, the process is simple and short. You do the setup in the app; they respond to a couple of texts.

  1. You add them in TapOkie

You choose who should know if you miss a daily check-in or use the emergency button. You enter their mobile number in the app — they never have to browse an app store.

  2. They verify once by SMS

They get a short verification and consent flow by text (and a web page opened from that link if needed). Once they accept, they are a verified contact. That step is one-time — not a daily or weekly task for them.

  3. Then they only hear from TapOkie when it matters

There is no second app to open, no feed to ignore, and no pressure to join your location map. If everything is normal and you check in on time, they often hear nothing at all — which is the point.

When do contacts get a message?

Alerts are intentional, not a stream of noise:

  • You miss your check-in window and the app sends a missed check-in alert to your verified contacts.
  • You use the emergency / one-tap help action (on plans that include it), so they know you asked for attention.
  • If you allow it for that situation, an alert can include a location link so they can open a map in the browser — again without installing TapOkie.

Why no app for contacts matters

Aging parents often refuse “another security app.” Family abroad will not join another tracker. Neighbours and colleagues will not keep a dedicated safety app “just in case.” SMS is already on almost every phone.

If your safety circle only works when everyone installs and signs up, half of your circle will never activate. Designing for plain SMS means more people can actually be there for you.

Still private — not a live feed for your contacts

Contacts do not get a constant view of your day. They are not silently watching your location or opening a shared map every morning. They hear from TapOkie when you miss a check-in or use emergency — moments that need a real response, not background surveillance.

You control who is on the contact list and location permissions on your own device. That keeps independence on your side and peace of mind on theirs, without turning them into full-time monitors.

Who this is for

People living alone who want family notified without forcing them onto a new app. Adult children supporting a parent. Solo travellers and freelancers who need someone at “home base” who can receive a text while going about their day.

If your contacts already have a mobile number, they are already set up for TapOkie alerts. No smartphone requirement on their end.

Common questions

Do my contacts need a smartphone?

No. Any phone that can receive SMS can be a TapOkie contact. A basic handset is enough.

Do they need to create a TapOkie account?

No. They verify and consent once using the links and SMS we send. They do not need an ongoing account or password for day-to-day alerts.

Is SMS reliable enough for safety alerts?

SMS goes to the number they verified. It works without the TapOkie app and without mobile data for the contact. Delivery still depends on their network carrier — the same way important texts from a bank or doctor do.

Will they get alerts every day?

No. If you check in on time, they typically get no daily “noise” message. Alerts are for misses, emergencies, and the situations the product is built for — not a constant stream.

What if they change phone numbers?

Update their number in the TapOkie app. They will need to verify the new number so future SMS land on the right handset.
